Government

Situated in Asia, India is one of the largest and most populous countries and is also known as the largest democracy in the world. India is a democratic republican country that declared its independence from the Britishers in the year 1947. and it was on January 26, 1950 that India declared itself as a republic country and its constitution came into force. Thus the Government in India was formed for the first time.

Speaking about Government in India it has to be said the country is ruled by a federal form of government, the President is the head of the state and the Prime Minister is th head of the government. The Government in India is officially known as the Union Government and is commonly known as the Central Government. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of the Government in India after its independence.

As per the Constitution, India is governed by a Westminster-style bicarmel parliamentary system. Legislature, Judiciary and Executive are three branches of governance in India. The bicarmel parliament that consists two houses, Lok Sabha (house of people) and Rajya Sabha (council of states) are the parts of legislature in India. The Rajya Sabha, a permanent body is made up of 250 members once in every six years after the assembly elections. On the other hand, Lok Sabha is made up of 545 members who are elected from their individual constituencies once in a five years after the general election is held ton form the new union government.



The President, vice-President and the council of ministers led by the Prime Minister are parts of the executive governance in India. As per constitution of India, a minister holding portfolio has to be a member of the any house of the parliament. The executive governance in India is under the legislature governance and the Prime Minister and the council of ministers under his or her authority are responsible to the Lok Sabha. The Judiciary branch of governance in India means the Supreme Court, which is headed by the Chief Justice of India. The Supreme Court is the largest body of jurisdiction in the country and controls the 21 High Courts in the states in India.

Speaking about Government in India it has to be mentioned here that at present, United Progressive Alliance, an alliance of Indian National Congress, the Left Front and some other parties is the ruling party of India. The UPA government was formed in the year 2004, when National Democratic Alliance (NDA), failed to prove its majority in the general election. Dr Manmohan Singh is the current Prime Minsiter of India and Mrs Pratibha Patel is the President of the nation.
