Languages in India

India is a land full of linguistic communities. Hindi, in the Devanagari script is the official language of the Federal government of India. English enjoys associate status but is the most important language for national, political, and commercial communication. Each state has its own language which is also its official language. There are 22 officially recognized Languages in India. But, around 33 different languages and 2000 dialects are been spoken by Indians.

Some Languages in India like Sanskrit and Tamil share a long history of more than 5,000 and 3,000 years respectively. The population of people speaking each language varies drastically. For example, Hindi has 250 million speakers, while Andamanese is spoken by relatively fewer people. Indian languages come from four distinct families, which are: Indo-European, Dravidian, Mon-Khmer, and Sino-Tibetan. Indo-European and Dravidian are the Languages in India, used by majority of Indian population. Indo-European languages dominate the northern and central India. In south India, mainly languages of Dravidian origin are spoken. In eastern India languages of Mon-Khmer group is popular. Sino Tibetan languages are spoken in the northern Himalayas and close to Burmese border.



Sanskrit, the classical Language in India, represents the highest achievement of the Indo-Aryan Languages. The beginning of Sanskrit literature may be traced back to Rig Vedic period. It is the oldest literary language of India, which is more than 5,000 years old and the basis of many modern Indian languages including Hindi and Urdu. Its earliest dialect form, Vedic was spoken by the Aryans. All the classical literature and the Indian epics have been written in Sanskrit.
