The sparsely populated state of Arunachal Pradesh in the far north east part of India is a thinly populated hilly tract covering roughly 83,573 square kilometers. The majority of the population of Arunachal Pradesh is composed of the tribes. We all know that festivals form an integral part of the tribal life. People of Arunachal Pradesh celebrate various festivals throughout the year. Most of the festivals in Arunachal Pradesh are related to agriculture to thank god for a good harvest. The festivals in Arunachal Pradesh are celebrated in a ritualistic manner. They express their joy of life through dances which is an important part of the festivals. Some of the important festivals of Arunachal Pradesh are Mopin and Solung of Adis, Losar of Monpas, Sherdukpens and Boori-Boot of the Hill Miris, Dree of Apatanis, Si-doni of Tagins, Nyokum of Nishis, Reh of Idu Mishmis etc. Animals are sacrificed in all the festivals in Arunachal Pradesh.

Solung is a main festival of “Adis” in Arunachal Pradesh. In this festival Doying-Bote or the God of Heaven and Kine-nane the goddess of wealth is worshipped. The festival lasts for five days during which animals are sacrificed, and the tribes prepare bows and arrows and other war weapons. It is celebrated to yield a rich crop and be safe from natural calamities, diseases and accidents.
Mopin-Adi festival is a popular festival of the Gallong community of Arunachal Pradesh celebrated to protect themselves from evil spirits and for prosperity, wealth and wisdom. During this time people rejoice by dancing the popular Popir dance form. The festival is celebrated for five days from 8 April before sowing of paddy seeds.
The most highly celebrated festival in Arunachal Pradesh is the Myokoh-Aptani festival of the Aptani society of Arunachal Pradesh. The festival is celebrated each year for the entire month of March. The festival is solemnized for the general well being of the Aptani society.
