Assam or Asom is a north eastern state of India. The capital of Assam is Dispur. The Guwahati is an important city of Assam. The State of Assam is situated at the Bramhaputra and Barak river valleys and comprises of the North Cachar Hills and Karbi Anglong. Assam covers an area of 78,438 square kilometers (30,285 sq mi). Assam is surrounded by Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. Assam also shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh.

The climate of Assam is Tropical Monsoon Rainforest. Assam experiences heavy rainfall all through the year but the peak of monsoon starts from June. Monsoon rains are accompanied by thunderstorms known as Bordoicila. The region is also prone to natural disasters. Earthquakes and floods due to overflow of Bramhaputra River claims many lives and destroys property almost every year.
Assam is famous for its tea and tea gardens. Assam is rich in petroleum, natural gas, coal, limestone, and minerals like magnetic quartzite, feldspar and sillimanites. Assam is rich in biodiversity. The Kaziranga Forest is famous for the endangered single horn Rhinoceros while the tiger sanctuary at Manas is two world heritage sites. At Manas you will find Asian elephants and some rare wildlife like golden Langur, the golden Cat, white winged Wood Duck and the only ape the Hoolock Gibbon and plant species. There are tropical rainforests, bamboo orchards and riverine grasslands.
The people of Assam speak Assamese and Bodo while in Barak valley Bengali is the official language. Assam is known for its festivals. Bihu is the celebrated all over Assam. The indigenous ethnic groups have made the folk music of Assam famous all over the world. Assam is rich in traditional crafts, made of cane and bamboo, pottery, terracotta, jewelry making, silk and cotton weaving.
