Bihar

The Indian Union State of Bihar is situated in north India with Patna as its capital. Bihar is surrounded in the north by the country of Nepal, Jharkhand in the south, and West Bengal in the east and Uttar Pradesh in the west. The Name of the state of Bihar has been derived from the Sanskrit word Vihara which means Abode. In the ancient times Bihar was called Magadha and was ruled by various dynasties like the Nanda and the Mauryan dynasty. River Ganga crosses Bihar dividing it into equal halves. There are many rivers that cross bihar like Son, Koshi, Gandak, Bagmati and Falgu. Major portion of Bihar lies in the fertile flat Indo-Gangetic plain. As a result majority of the population depends on agriculture.

The Chief Minister of Bihar is Nitish kumar who succeeded Rabri Devi wife of Indian Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. The State of Bihar has 9 administrative divisions and 38 districts. There are three airports in Bihar Lok Nayak Jayaprakash airport in Patna, Bhagalpur Airport and Gaya-Patna airport. Bihar is well connected with rail to all the mojor cities and parts of India. Bihar is well connected to Kolkata, Gaya, Nalanda, and Delhi through its vast network of the state and national highways.



Chatt, Teej and Chitragupta puja are the major festivals of Bihar. The Bihula-Bishari is a great festival of the Anga region. Bihar known as the Hindi Heartland of India, Hindi is the official language of the state. Other languages spoken in this part are Bhojpuri, Magadhi, Urdu, Maithili and Angika. The oldest poetry written in Hindi by Sarahapa was written in Angika. The major tourist attractions in Bihar are Bodh Gaya, Nalada, Rajgir, Vishnupad Temple, Vikramshila, Bhagalpur, Mahavir Temple at Patna, the remains of Neolithic civilization at Champaran and Sasaram.
