Festivals in Gujarat

Navaratri:

Navaratri is the festival that is celebrated for nine nights in the month of October, followed by Dussera that is another very important festival in Gujarat. During the observance of different festival people flock to the village squares and at the temple compounds. They dance and sing till late at night and sometimes till dawn. These people worship the mother goddess. During this festival artisans worship their tools, peasants worship their ploughs, warriors worship their weapons and students their books.

Holi:

The spring festival of Holi is celebrated with a different kind of enthusiasm in Gujarat. Holi marks the beginning of the season for the cultivation of Rabi crop. On the next day of Holi is called the Dhuleti or Dhuli Padvo. During this time people throw colour powder at one another and indulge in fun and mirth.



International Kite Festival:

International Kite Festival is observed on the 14th of January in Gujarat, the day on which the sun is just over the tropic of cancer. People of all ages go to the rooftop of their house and fly kite on that day. Presently the festival is held in Ahmedabad where people from all around the world participate and that is why it is now an International Kite Festival.

Janmashtami:

Janmasthami is the birthday celebration of Lord Krishna. According to the Hindu calendar, the celebratin of Janmashtami is bdone on the twenty-third day in the Hindu month of Shravan. Janmashtami is celebrated with much gusto at Jagat Mandir situated in Dwaraka. This is the worshipping of lord Krishna as an infant.
